Synthroid/Levothyroxine Information
Levothyroxine is a naturally occurring hormone produced by the thyroid glands. Unfortunately in some cases the thyroid glands cannot produce enough Levothyroxine needed by the body. That is when use of the Levothyroxine drug is prescribed. The Levothyroxine drug is commonly called Synthroid. Aside from the treatment of hormone deficiency, Synthroid can also be used to treat the enlargement of the thyroid glands also known as goiter. Synthroid has also been used to treat thyroid cancer.
How It Works
Levothyroxine has a narrow therapeutic index and requires careful dosage titration to avoid the consequences of over- or under-treatment. Many drugs interact with levothyroxine sodium. Hence it is necessary that regular adjustments be made in dosage of Synthroid to maintain therapeutic response.
Euthyrox T4 Side Effects
Common side effects produced by Synthroid include fatigue, increased appetite, weight loss, heat intolerance, fever & excessive sweating. Certain patients may also experience headaches, hyperactivity, nervousness, anxiety, irritability, emotional ability, insomnia. In rare cases, Synthroid has been found to lead to impaired fertility and even cardiac arrest.
Euthyrox T4 Dosage
For adults and teenagers, the dosage is 0.0125 to 0.05 mg once daily for the first intakes. As you go on the therapy, your doctor might increase your dosage until you reach 0.075 to 0.125 mg daily. The recommended dose must not exceed 0.15 mg for a day.
For children less than six months, the dosage is computed based on body weight and determined by the doctor. The usual dose normally ranges from 0.025 to 0.05 mg once daily.
For children six months up to 1 year, the dosage is still based on body weight and would averagely range from 0.05 to 0.075 mg once daily.
For children 1 to 5 years old, body weight is still the major consideration and the dosage must fall within 0.075 to 0.1 mg once a day.
For children 6-10 years, the dosage is still based on body weight and must be from 0.10 to 0.15 mg daily.
For children over 10 years, the dose is again dependent upon body weight and must be from 0.15 to 0.2 mg once daily.
